choosing a patron saint

why choose a confirmation saint?

We choose a Confirmation saint (like we choose a Confirmation sponsor) not out of due diligence to the “rule,” but rather because we realize how unfortunate it would be to travel alone. We recognize how important it is to know your Confirmation saint not only by name, but also by story. The saints have so much to teach us about this journey.

As you prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation you are asked to choose a Confirmation saint as your patron/patroness. At your Confirmation you will be confirmed using this name. The saint you choose should reflect a devotion you have to the saint, virtues, or gifts to which you aspire, or the patron saint of certain gifts that are dear to you.

how to choose a saint’s name?

Saints are some of the greatest intercessors for us. Just like we would ask our friends or family to pray for us, we can ask the saints to pray for us! Because we believe that the saints are standing before God in Heaven praying and worshiping, we believe that they hear our prayers and intercede for us by bringing them to the feet of God.

When you choose a saint name to take on as your own at Confirmation you are asking them to pray for you and to help you get to Heaven! You might choose them because you admire their virtue, have similar interests, or you admire their story.
